Wie man weiß hat Hunter Laing die Ardnahoe distillery auf Islay gebaut. Allerdings gabs davon natürlich noch keinen whisky für das Fèis Ìle 2019. Diese Lücke füllte der Scarabus, der ‘rocky place’ in altnordisch, first expression in Hunter Laing’s new, ‘mysterious’ Scarabus range.
Den gab es am Ardnahoe open day 2019 stattdessen. Das label design ist inspiriert durch den auf Islay geborenen Author und Gelehrten John Francis Campbell, der Celtic folklore sammelt und dokumentiert.
Ein wenig Geschichte. Die Scarrabus oder auch Scarabuss Distillery, established 1817 ist sicher eine der obskursten Destillerien der Insel Islay. Sie existierte als typische farm distillery nur bis – 1818.
Gegründet von John Darroch & Co möglicherweise als Versuch nach dem Small Stills Act von 1816. Die wenigen Unterlagen über Scarabus weisen eine „76-gallon (345 litres) single still operation“ für die Jahre 1817-18 aus.
Eine Scarrabus Farm existiert an der Ballygrant Road zwischen Bridgend und Ballygrant, aber es ist nicht klar, ob dies die gleiche Farm oder gar die Lokalität der verschwundenen Destillerie ist.
Als whisky nicht zu verwechseln mit dem Scarabus, The dark Side of Islay, Blended Islay Malt Scotch Whisky von Malts of Scotland (MoS). Davon hat es wahrscheinlich mindestens zwei Abfüllungen gegeben.
Hunter Lang sagt dazu: „Scarabus, an Islay Single Malt for those with a curious mind and an eye for detail. A whisky bold and honest about its origins and just a little mysterious about everything else. The brand creates a sense of mystery and discovery through the tagline “only those who seek shall find” and through the intentionally ambiguous symbols incorporated on the label. The look and feel drew inspiration from the work of Islay born John Francis Campbell, who created the sunshine recorder, a device that tallies the hours of sunshine in a day, as well as creating a vast collection of Celtic folklore tales. Scarabus is known as a mystical area on the Isle of Islay, and the name dates back to 13th century, and translates to “a rocky place” in Old Norse. Bottled at the perfect drinking strength of 46% and proudly without colouring or chill- filtration.“
